Experts warn against partaking in latest fad diet: ’The potential risks … pose significant concerns’

The human body thrives on a variety of nutrients, but it needs more than just protein, fat and carbohydrates to function properly. But while the benefits of these vitamins have been extensively documented by medical professionals, experts caution against consuming too much of any one nutrient.

The new vegan diet trend has gained popularity among both individuals and society at large. According to research from Cornell University Medical School's Food & Nutrition Research Center, the latest fad diet recommends eating mostly plant-based foods with limited animal products. However, some participants may be unaware or unable to follow this diet. As a result, many people have been exposed to potential risks associated with this diet, including gastrointestinal issues, heart disease and other health conditions.

The first major concern stems from the fact that the majority of dietary fiber consumed by vegans is unprocessed starch, which can be problematic for those who suffer from celiac disease, according to researchers from Harvard Medical School. Celiac disease affects millions around the world, causing abdominal pain, bloating and gas. This condition can occur due to gluten ingestion for several weeks or months after cutting out breads and grains that contain gluten. While this diet might seem healthy, there is still no definitive evidence as to if this new diet is effective in the prevention of celiac disease.

But even with the risk of developing celiac disease, the overall health benefits of the new vegan diet are likely beneficial. A study conducted by nutritionists at NYU Grossman School of Medicine found that following a ketogenic diet can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and inflammation. These findings suggest that the benefits of this diet could outweigh the risks, making it an alternative to traditional western medicine.

Another potential downside of the vegan diet is cardiovascular disease, which can arise from excessive consumption of high-fat or red meat-based meals, according to a report published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. For example, studies have shown that following a vegetarian or vegan diet might help lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Because this diet may limit the intake of saturated fats and trans fat, which contribute to the development of heart disease, it is important to consume plenty of fresh leafy greens, vegetables and berries to prevent the buildup of unhealthy triglycerides. Additionally, drinking plenty of water with low sugar content can help balance the electrolyte levels in the body.


This diet has also been linked to a reduction in certain types of cancer, particularly cancers of the prostate, breast and colon, according to a report in The BMJ. Although most studies have indicated a correlation between the vegan diet and reduced mortality rates, there are still uncertainties regarding the causal effect of this diet on specific cancers. Furthermore, because the number of clinical trials investigating the impact of different diets on cancer is small, it remains unclear whether the results are consistent and robust.
